Wouldn’t you love to be able to improvise, or improvise better? If so, this 3-session workshop will help you!
During the workshop we will explore improvisatory techniques in general, as well as genre-specific approaches suitable for jazz, classical, and modal traditions. We will also tackle some common issues faced by classically-trained musicians attempting to improvise, and develop strategies to address them. The approach is to build ‘musical thinking’ on an instrument, and to explore widely-applicable techniques which can then be developed further in particular specialisms to suit individual interests.
We hope to develop the course into a regular monthly improvisation session.
The workshop will most benefit instrumentalists who have reasonable competence on their instrument, and is open to conservatoire students as well as enthusiastic amateurs!
Sessions will include the following:
Exploring modes
Learning simple tunes
Analysing and understanding simple harmony
Developing Practice Strategies
Listening and discussing some recordings,
Simple transcription work and discussion of how to use this in your own playing.
Discussion of individual goals with improvisation
Study and follow up materials will be provided.
Timing: 3 x 2-hour workshops, 3, 10 and 17 May, 17.00-19.00 BST.
