Why microtones?

In this workshop, led by Negar Bouban, you will encounter ideas and sounds that are integral to traditions of the Middle East, but that have been lost in many regions (and to many ears) through equal temperament. These sounds and intervals are often referred to as ‘microtones’.

Through a range of practical tasks, participants will explore their musicianship in new ways, listening to the differences between musical phrases with different intervals, considering how and why the differences could matter. The workshop will engage with the broader question of how we can learn to be expressive through so-called microtonality, and the extent to which it is defined by theory or practice.

The course is open to everyone interested.

Timing: 1 x 3-hour workshop, 7 November 2020, 15.00-18.00 GMT.
