Building on the success of our November workshops and at the request of participants, Music Boat is pleased to announce a new, fortnightly series of meetings.
Modal Music Boat Meetings are to gather us together for journeys in a club spirit, in which members will get to know and support one another in their explorations of modal music; we will take a rather practical approach, while keeping an open mind to theoretical matters.
Each ‘journey’ will consist of four meetings, with every meeting lasting 90-minutes. The first three meetings out of the four will each focus on a particular piece of modal (dastgah, makam) repertoire, chosen for its character in the context of modal traditions. We will work on interpretative details relating to ornamentation, tuning etc, along with strategies for overcoming challenges the piece presents. Participants will be provided with material to study in advance.
The meetings will be led by Rachel Beckles Willson, Negar Bouban or Yasamin Shahhosseini. Every fourth meeting we will all be there to hold a shared session and gather for some reading, listening and a discussion around aspects of modal music. Similarly, this material will be made available to participants in advance.
Timing: 4 x 1.5-hour meetings, 6, 20 February, 6, 20 March, 15:00 GMT.
Early-bird price £72 (register by 22 January)
